As I get ready for the New Year, I consider it a privilege and a challenge to serve as the 2013 President for the Executive Women in Texas Government. Through my involvement in EWTG and Leadership Texas, I have learned:
- Leadership skills by serving on committees and serving twice on the EWTG Board,
- Women can do whatever we set our minds to do, and that
- Women are remarkable creatures that will always rise to the challenge!
The EWTG theme for 2013 is community; we will continue with some of the great Community Service Projects we have established and expand upon these efforts to support leadership and personal growth for young women. EWTG also strives to expand our reach to more women in the community as luncheon speakers and partner with other community organizations.
As your President, I want to encourage you to grow personally and professionally and to participate in the 2013 luncheons, mini-courses, educational opportunities, community service activities and the conference. The 2013 Board Members and their Committee Chairs have been updated on the website at www.ewtg.org. Look for an email blast to the membership with more details on the EWTG Leadership for this year. Now is the time to get involved – if you haven’t already signed up for one of these great Committees!
Several members have asked about the poem I read from the Holiday luncheon at Green Pastures, so I have included it below. Enjoy!
When I was younger I used to believe in the concept of one best friend,
And then I started to develop both personally and professionally
And I found out that if you allow your network to open up,
EWTG would show you the best in many women.
One member is needed when you're going through things with your supervisor.
Another member is needed when you're going through things with your co-workers.
Another will sit beside you at the luncheon as you delight in your children and their activities.
Another when you want to shop, share, heal, hurt, joke, or just be.
One member will say, 'Let's cry together,'
Another, 'Let's fight together,'
Another, 'Let's walk away together.'
One member will meet your spiritual and motivational need,
Another your shoe fetish,
Another your love for movies,
Another will be with you in your season of confusion, divorce, and health issues,
Another will be your clarifier,
Another the wind beneath your wings, by serving on a committee.
But whatever their assignment in your life,
On whatever the occasion,
On whatever the day,
Or wherever you need them to meet you, with their gym shoes on and hair pulled back,
Or to hold you back from making a complete fool of yourself …
These members will become your best friends.
So whether you have been a member for 20 minutes or 20 years, stay in the EWTG Circle of Friends.
It’s going to be a great year!
Mary Castleberry
EWTG President
